The life of the driver of the U-Haul truck may have been spared if detection of the incident hadn’t depended on people in the vicinity. The first high-tech tool that could have immediately brought law enforcement is that of Gunshot Detection. The audio detection of a gunshot is enough to provide the relative location of the shooting to local law enforcement. Once on site they could have attempted to assist the victim, and certainly would have dispatched paramedics right away.
The second high-tech tool is that of Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) equipped with video analytics. High-tech, machine learning, especially AI-based analytics, could have provided a similar response when the flash of a gun is witnessed. This technology has existed for some time as many communities already employ it. In fact, some Gunshot Detection systems employ both audio and visual means of detection. In this case, a privately owned CCTV system equipped with analytics of this type might have been able to detect the flash of the gun, thus reporting the incident to the storage facility’s alarm company.
